This hacking is an affront to the freedom of speech and an attempt to throttle an emerging independent medium. We will expose the people who are behind this act, and urge our friends in the media to highlight the attempt to muzzle what is the finest news and views blogsite in the state of Andhra Pradesh.

It is quite likely that the Prime Minister's Office, alongwith Intelligence Bureau boss ESL Narasimhan etc are harassing you guys. As you might know Mumbai-based media blog Mediamalice.blogspot was also hacked. The hackers have even left a warning on Mediamalice itself. Please read the real story on what happened to Mediamalice and how it was killed by Indian Express top bosses like Shekhar Gupta, Saurav Majumdar and Sanjaya Baru with help from Prime Minister's Office (PMO). You must also understand that equipment is going to be installed at both international gateways to censor dissident blogs. Cisco and Google have already agreed to co-operate. In fact, Joji Philip even wrote a front page story in Economic Times about this a few days ago. Why is no newspaper writing about secret and selective censorship of blogs in India? There is a hidden Emergency going on. We seem to be going the way of China, Saudi Arabia and North Korea. Make no mistake, our constitutional right of the freedom of the press is in danger! Anyway, please read how Mediamalice was hacked into and destroyed even though it was never a threat to national security. Here is the story:
This is what the now-half-dead Mediamamu.blogspot had to tell the now-defunct Mediamalice.blogspot; comrades in arms!:
"Middle of last week, IE group CEO/editor Shekhar Gupta and senior edior Unni Rajen Shankar landed at the Prime Minister's office in New Delhi. The two fat men were there to meet former FE Editor Sanjaya Baru, who now lords over the PMO. The Express editors carried a memorandum from Sourav Majumdar, stapled with printed copies of your blog. The editors apprised Baru of the goings-on in Bombay, and how one of their senior editors (Sourav) is being harassed in a Bombay blog. Baru, for whom Sourav was the blue-eyed boy during his FE days, took up the complaint and promised all help. Remember that it was Baru who promoted a nincompoop ike Sourav to Dy Executive Editor post in 2003, before his exit from Express group. PMO still shares a good equation with many FEiites, and ex-FEiites. Baru still plugs his PMO stories through Express and FE, and the conduits are Shekhar and Sourav. To create leverage in PMO, Shekhar had let Baru leave FE with just a one-day notice in May 2004, though IE group insists on a 3-month notice for everyone.
After the briefing, Baru called his secretary to discuss ways to help his Express friends. One thing was clear to all: Nobody wanted to get the PMO name involved in the muck. The idea is to put an end to Media Malice. The Baru-secretary duo worked out a plan like this: Google (which owns Blogspot.com) has a million-dollar investment proposal pending before the Ministry of Home Affairs for expanding its Bangalore facility to shift a major chunk of the R&D work to India.Google's India R&D chief Krishna Bharat has been to the MHA several times to push the proposal, but it has been mired in red tape due to the large figures involved. The strategy worked out at the PMO (without the PM's knowledge) is this: Midde of this week, Krishna Bhat will be visiting MHA again. The PMO duo has conveyed to MHA joint secretary to demand that Google reveal the IP address from which Media Malice is updated.
Blogspot rarely reveals the details of its blog owners, including IP numbers to authorities. But it has done so in China six times in last two years, on the Communist Party's request. Since the investment proposal is pending, Baru and his secy are pretty confident that the IP numbers as well as the login details will be made available to push the proposal. Krishna Bhat, who is tasked with pushing the Google investment is expected to make a special request to Google HQ to reveal the Media Malice uploading IP address.
As you know, once the IP numbers are known, it is a matter of a few minutes for security agencies to spot the computer location. All ISPs are more than willing to please the authorities to shut blogs. Remember last year's blog blackout? The same MHA brains are at work now. The strategy is to get the IP number/s and login details as quick as possible, (they fear that Malice may shut down and vanish) which will be transferred to the IB, which comes under MHA. IB chief ESL Narisimhan, who is in line for a promotion to RAW, has already agreed to do Baru's bidding, in anticipation of a favourable PMO reco. In a few hours of IB getting its hands on Malice login details, IB would have traced you.
But neither IB nor MHA want to dirty their hands in what is precisely a private issue - Malice content has nothing to do with national security. So, there will be no case filed and no legal action. The strategy is more devious. The Baru brainwave is to leak the details of Malicebhai to those who have been attacked here, so that the victims will take law into their hands and finish you off. Shekhar & Unni have given go-ahead to Sourav & gang to get Dharavi goons to set on you.
I can't say what they will ask of you. But take my word that they will not spare you. As you know, once your identity is out, there will be no hiding. Media will shun you -- but that is the easy part. All targets of Malice - Gurbir, BNK, Sourav, Manoj, Raghu, Jerry, - will all be on you.
You will wonder how I knew the details. My sources are high up in Shekhar's office, who have regularly leaked me news on the inside media. But I have never written much on Express because I did not want my source in trouble.
From what I know from the Express CEO's office, Sourav and Manoj are seen as necessary evil to run the paper called FE. They will not let them down. For Shekhar & Unni, what attacks Sourav today can hit them tomorrow. And Baru, who has schemed the plot, is all too willing to keep his friends happy.
Once the dust settles, everyone will be a winner except you. Baru would have pleased his conduits, Shekhar and Unni would have defended their organisation, Sourav & Manoj (and perhaps others) would have had pleasure of revenge, Narasimhan would have got the promotion, Krishna Bhatt would have succeeded in pushing investment and the MHA joint secretary would have got a pat from PMO for facilitating the entire hit job.
I cant advise you on what to do - it is up to you. May be you should delete the post about Sourav - it may cool them down. May be you should scrap the blog itself, that may soothe them. May be you should just take out the comments, that would be enough. I have no idea to what extent Sourav and Manoj are out to get you and what will calm their fury. I dont think you have too many options.
I dont have much more to say. My email id is chaloohogayamamoo@gmail.com. MediaMamu is now an undergound blog, open only for invited visitors. The Malice saga is the next cover story. Keep me posted on what you do. I am out of India now. "
Well said, man.
Guys if were not happy put the message across. But where is the need to hack. It's highly objectionable. Stop this brazen acts.
Vikram
We are with you. In three months we have read stories which would have never made it to the pages of a newspaper or a story on the TV news channels.
Just let us know who these crooks who tried hack your site, and we will put up their names on Orkut and other weblogs. Let us expose these hidden agents who stifle free speech.

DONT SEND MAIL to chaloohogayamamoo@gmail.com
IF you send email, your IP will be known to him. (emails carry IP addresses). If at all you want to reply him, do so from some outside cafe or others.

Vikram,
Find out a fool-proof mechanism first to foil hacking and at tje same time take all care to protect your skin in the event of being traced. Better stop making furious comments but give enough hints to "expose" the black sheep without exactly naming them. I can tell you man, don't go by journos words. They say that they are with you but when you are in neck deep trouble, they ignore you. Because, many journalists are spineless and punch-less.
All the best

Dear Vikram, please use several PROXY SERVERS whenever you update or else you will be forced to go the way of Mediamamu.blogspot.com and Mediamalice.blogspot.com. Mediamamu was forced to become an underground blog which can be accessed only by invitees. So be careful. The powers that be may even try to Intelligence Bureau or Andhra Police cyber cell or CERT to detect your IP address. You must also be extremely careful not to be dubbed as a blog having Naxalite or Maoist sympathies or else they will claim you are a threat to 'national security' and start a witch hunt for you. All the very best.
Postscript: Your expose on the hypocrisy of fake communist N Ram was excellent! Great job! Hats off to you!
Dear Vikram, immediately contact Reporters Sans Frontieres as well as Index on Censorship through their respective web sites and write to them about how dissident media blogs are being censored and hacked in India which claims to be a democracy. Contact Amnesty International also. Do not take this lying down. Indian journalists working in newspapers abroad reading this blog are also requested to write about this censorship in the newspapers they work. This covert Emergency must be exposed. PUCL and other human rights wallahs, are you all listening? Right to information activists, are you all sleeping? Do you want Google and government to impose covert Emergency and get away with it? Why are you not raising a hue and cry about this before it is too late? Why don't you understand that your constitutional rights and freedoms are being blatantly violated in broad daylight?
Why can't PUDR / PUCL take up this issue of blog censorship by the Centre and PMO in India? Isn't this violation of constitutional freedoms and right to free speech? Why can't the below Economic Times report be converted into a PIL by any court? Why should Right To Information activists not take up the issue of blatant censorship of blogs like Mediamalice, which has got nothing to do with so-called 'national security'? Why should we tolerate this covert Emergency? Why can't someone contact Reporters Sans Frontieres, Amnesty International and Index on Censorship?
As Friedrich Gustav Emil Martin Niemöller (January 14, 1892 – March 6, 1984) prominent German anti-Nazi theologian rightly said:
When the Nazis came for the communists,
I remained silent;
I was not a communist.
When they locked up the social democrats,
I did not speak out;
I was not a social democrat.
When they came for the trade unionists,
I did not speak out;
I was not a trade unionist.
When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out.

Screening for dangerous blogs, sites
JOJI THOMAS PHILIP & MOUMITA BAKSHI CHATTERJEE
TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ TUESDAY, DECEMBER 05, 2006 01:13:39 AM]

NEW DELHI: Errant websites won't be able to escape this net. The Centre is putting in place an advance screening system at the bandwidth landing stations to block individual websites and blogs perceived as threats to national security.
The technology to be put in place at the eight landing stations — which bring international bandwidth into the country — will be capable of blocking websites at a sub-domain level, thus saving internet service providers (ISPs) from a sweeping shutdown. "GoI has realised that the most effective way to keep out such sites is through URL-based blocking solutions installed at international gateways," a highly-placed source told ET.
After the system is in place, the department of telecommunications (DoT) can direct international long distance (ILD) players who own the landing stations to block a particular URL at the sub-domain level.
This will come as a major relief for ISPs who were carrying the burden to block specific webpages till now. The issue of blocking individual websites had come into prominence following the Mumbai blasts in July, when DoT had directed ISPs to ban 18 blogs and websites.
However, as ISPs did not possess the technologies needed to execute the directive, the service providers implemented the ban at the domain level. This resulted in a public outcry and international criticism as users were unable to access hundreds of thousands of websites and blogs.
Sources also confirmed that DoT has circulated a draft report on Monday on 'technical measurers for blocking of websites' to key ministries, security agencies, leading ISPs and the three ILD players who own landing stations.
At present, there are eight landing stations in India. Of these, five are owned by VSNL, two by Reliance Communications and one by Bharti Airtel. Sources said these ILD operators would be mandated to install equipment specified by DoT.
The department in its bid to shortlist the requisite equipment to block websites had recently called for presentations from leading vendors such as Cisco, Juniper and Span Systems, sources added. The Internet Service Providers Association of India (ISPA), the body representing all ISPs, has already welcomed the DoT move .
